Sudanese Representative in the UN, Abdul Mahmoud Abdul Halim revealed that the UNSC decided to extend the UNAMID mandate for another year, adding that the UNSC will hold a meeting for that purpose.
Commenting on the UNSG report on restrictions faced by UNAMID in the course of its work by the Sudanese government and rebels, Abdul Mahmoud said that Khartoum did not impose any restrictions adding that the international civil servants writing such reports reduce the value and credibility of the UN.
He affirmed that the situation in Darfur as testified by the tripartite mechanism (UN/AU/Sudanese government) is progressing and better than it was before.
It is to be noted that the UNSG, Ban Ki Moon called on Khartoum and JEM "to immediately cease their ongoing military confrontation and commit to the peace process."
He said that JEM’s withdrawal from peace talks in Doha "has undermined the goal of an inclusive and rapid resolution of the Darfur conflict."
